The Betta Fish Nebula (also known as the Mermaid Nebula) is part of the large but faint Supernova Remnant G296.5+10.0, which is located in Centaurus.  Little is known of this 14000 year old enigmatic object. This particular image of the beautiful and wistful tendrils that make up the nebula is based on hydrogen alpha (red) and oxygen III (blue) emission data.

The images was completed using data from a remote hosting facility.
