The Orion Nebula, Messier 42, together with the Running Man Nebula (NGC 1977). M42 is the brightest nebula in the northern hemisphere with an apparent magnitude of 4.0.  The bright centre of the nebula, a region of intense star formation, is the middle star of “Orion’s sword”. The nebula is approximately 1344 ly from earth. This alternative wide field (extended) interpretation is taken with an unfiltered full colour SIGMA fp from a moderately dark sky location in Italy. This particular rendition emphasises the reflection nebula components of the two nebulae and the surrounding areas giving a gentler, more subtle rendition than the narrow band image in the portfolio.
